Mariestela Fernandez started out as an actress in 1977, getting her dramatic education in Mexico, UK & Spain.\u00a0 <\/span>In 1982 decided to try a career in costume design finishing her studies by 1984 in Madrid, Spain. <\/span><\/p>\n

She then came back to Mexico City and started designing Theatre plays and Advertising campaigns for Mexico, U.S.A., Europe & Japan. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 1988 she began designing for feature films, which started getting her recognitions & nominations for the \u201cAriel<\/b><\/span>\u201d (The Mexican Academy Award), which she finally won\u00a0 <\/span>for the first time in 1994 for her work in \u201cBride to Be<\/b><\/span>\u201d, a film about the history of the Jewish community in Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1996 she won the Best Costume Design in a Theatre Play<\/b><\/span> award, given by the Mexican Association of Drama Critics for the play \u201cMary, Queen of Scots<\/span>\u201d<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1997 she was nominated for Best Costume Design<\/b><\/span> by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts & Sciences The Goya<\/b> Award <\/b><\/span> for her work in \u201cPerdita Durango<\/span>\u201d<\/b>, Directed by Alex de la Iglesia .<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1999 she designed the costumes for the film \u201c Before Night Falls<\/strong><\/span>\u201d directed by Julian Schnabel, winner of the Grand special Jury Prize in the Venice 2000 Film Festival<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Since then she has been awarded with 6 ARIEL<\/b> <\/span>Awards for Best<\/b> Costume<\/b> Design<\/b><\/span> for the following films plus 14 Nominations: \u201cUnder a Spell<\/span>\u201d<\/b>, directed by Carlos Carrera, \u201cHerod\u2019s Law<\/span>\u201d<\/b>, directed by Luis Estrada, \u201cThe Crime of Padre Amaro<\/span>\u201d<\/b>, directed by Carlos Carrera\u00a0 <\/span>(nominated for Best foreign film for the Oscar and Golden Globe) \u201cKM31<\/b><\/span>\u201d directed by Rigoberto Casta\u00f1eda and \u201cLa Habitaci\u00f3n<\/span>\u201d <\/b>by Carrera, Bolado and Contreras.<\/span><\/p>\n

She has been nominated for the Silver Ariel Award for Best Costume Design 15 times.<\/p>\n

In 2011 she received\u00a0 <\/span>the Coral Award \/Havana Film Festival for best Costume design <\/b><\/span>for her work in the film \u201cEl Infierno<\/span>\u201d.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

She was the designer for the Netflix <\/b><\/span>show Narcos Colombia and Narcos M\u00e9xico<\/span><\/b>.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

She is a founding member of Ba\u00fal Cinematogr\u00e1fico<\/strong><\/span> costume rental house in Mexico since 1988.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1999 she is a member of the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts & Sciences<\/strong><\/span> (Academia Mexicana de Ciencias y Artes Cinematogr\u00e1ficas).<\/p>\n

In 2018 she was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n
